Bernie Goes All in on the Squad, Tlaib Expected to Endorse at Detroit Rally

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-13) will join Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) for a rally this weekend in Detroit where the first-term congresswoman is expected to endorse Sanders in his bid for the presidency.

The Sanders campaign said in a statement that they will be joined Sunday “by local leaders and activists fighting for economic, environmental, and racial justice, and against the corporate assault on working families across America.”

Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN-05), Tlaib’s fellow “squad” members, already announced their endorsements of Sanders. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA-070), however, intends to back hometown candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

“Bernie Sanders is coming to #13thDistrictStrong and we both hope you will join us in fighting against the corporate assault on our families,” Tlaib wrote on Twitter in announcing the event.

Omar offered her endorsement of Sanders following the most recent Democrat debate in Westerville, Ohio, as The Minnesota Sun reported.

“We know that in order to take on Trump, we’re going to need a unifier, someone who understands what the fight looks like and someone who is ready to defeat him,” Omar said, touting the fact that Sanders is “the only candidate that is proposing a complete cancellation of student debt.”

Unlike Pressley, Omar skipped over hometown candidate Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), as did Attorney General Keith Ellison.

Ocasio-Cortez formally endorsed Sanders at a New York rally on Saturday. The Sanders campaign seems to be applying the same strategy to Tlaib’s endorsement.

The Vermont socialist’s campaign also announced that he will join Tlaib for a tour of her district after Sunday’s rally.

“There are few better examples of what unfettered corporate greed is doing to working people than what’s going on in Michigan,” Sanders said in a statement. “I look forward to spending the day with Rashida, hearing directly from people in her district because their concerns speak to the broader needs of the working class around the country, especially affordable housing and guaranteeing quality education and health care for all.”
